The raw materials for the tannery are hides, sheepskins, chemicals, electricity and water.

The raw materials which are available in local market are raw hides, raw sheepskins, lime, salt, water and electricity. Other chemicals for production are purchased from abroad.  They are imported from different countries mostly Italy, Spain, German, Turkey and china. The suppliers in these countries have strong relationship with the tannery and are reliable. The Dire tannery has also selected list of suppliers in the same countries as alternative suppliers for required chemicals.

Local available raw materials are obtained throughout the year from well established suppliers.  The tannery maintains import raw materials at least for three months while that of local available raw material for a month to enable its production process to be continuous.



Raw Hides and Skins

In the history of the world leather market, hides and skins from Ethiopia origin have wider international reputation for their unique natural substances which include fitness, cleanness, compactness of texture, thickness, flexibility and strength. These characteristics are as discussed below:

 Sheep Skins

More than 80% percent of the Ethiopian sheep skins which comes from the highlands is categorized as “hair sheep race” and is internationally known to be the world’s finest with highly compacted texture. The Ethiopian sheep skins globally recognized as excellent raw materials particularly for the production of high quality leather for dress glove, sports glove, shoe upper and garment.


Hides from Ethiopia are internationally popular for their fine grain pattern fiber, structure and are known as excellent raw materials for production of quality upper leather.

Dire Tannery will enjoy special advantages in the quality of Ethiopian hides and skins. Moreover the company has adopted the necessary technology to meet the world standard of product quality.


Leather production passes through various process stages. Each stage requires large quantity and various types of chemicals.


Water is the most decisive factor for the establishment and operation of a tannery. As a result, the existing water supply in the tannery is enough for processing volume of finished leather for Dire Tannery.

The required water can be secured from two big Borehole, and Addis Ababa Municipality of water supply for the area.


The total power requirement of the existing tannery is consumed the electricity about 3,648kwh/day with the value of Birr 2,193.00 for one shift operation.











Hot news


The tannery is equipped with modern machineries from Italy and France; and experienced personnel, including foreigners, to meet the demand. There are over 400 workers in the tannery.
The total area of final leather is approx. 30,000 ±3,000 sq ft per day.
